Whether guiding families through complex planning, resolving high-stakes litigation, or advising executors and trustees on estate administration, Ben combines technical expertise with genuine care. Ben holds the Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) designation from the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), the global organization for professionals specializing in estate and succession planning. His expertise has also been recognized by The Best Lawyers in Canada, where he is listed as a leading practitioner in Trusts and Estates Law.

A graduate of McGill University’s Faculty of Law, Ben trained in both common law and civil law, equipping him with a broad perspective on legal systems and the role of law in our society. He has further honed his advocacy skills through the Osgoode Hall Intensive Trial Advocacy Workshop at York University, a program widely recognized for its hands-on litigation training.

Ben is actively engaged in the estate planning community. He presently serves as Deputy Chair of the Atlantic Provinces Branch of STEP and has previously served on the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society Practice Standards Committee for Wills, Powers of Attorney, and Personal Directives.

Committed to his community, Ben also serves as Chair of the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore, supporting healthcare initiatives at South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater and Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg.

Ben lives in Bridgewater with his wife, Blair McIlwain, and their rescue dog, Conrad.
